Sandra’s Consulting Status

Mental health professionals often consult with Sandra by phone on special advanced procedures. Sandra is an EMDRIA Approved Consultant and Certified Therapist, a Fellow of the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation, and was invited faculty to the First World Congress of Ego State Therapy in Bad Orb, Germany. Sandra also did extensive corporate consulting and was a member of the APA Division 13 of Consulting Psychology. In that capacity she providing consultation to large corporations, teams, executives, and to the Past President of APA.

Michael’s Consulting Status

Mental health professionals often consult with Michael both in-person and via phone on special, advanced procedures. Michael is an EMDRIA Approved Consultant and Certified Therapist, with special interests in treating addictions and compulsions, the considerations of treating LGBTQ-identifying persons, the EMDR early trauma approach, the creative integration of Ego State Therapy and hypnosis with EMDR therapy, and proper initial assessment for complex trauma and dissociation.  Michael is an active member of EMDRIA’s Standards and Training Committee.

EMDRIA Consultation

Please note that although both Sandra and Michael are EMDRIA Approved Consultants, this standing is most relevant to clinicians seeking Certification in EMDR therapy. Most mental health professionals seeking consultation are interested in the applications of EMDR therapy with complex or dissociative clients. Because of the special–and specific–requirements for EMDRIA Certification, consultation on advanced treatment applications generally cannot count toward EMDRIA Certification. EMDRIA Certification involved developing and demonstrating proficiency in the application of EMDR therapy’s Standard Protocol. Dissociative cases often require modifications to the Standard Protocol, so consultation for these applications are typically outside the context of Standard Protocol. The one exception to this policy would be the development of Phase I skills in the diagnostic screening and assessment of dissociative clients, as this is critical to ensure that the competent EMDR therapist is proceeding into treatment with a full understanding of the client’s presenting difficulties.

Group Consultation

Both Dr. Paulsen and Mr. Coy conduct consultation in person or by phone with groups of mental health professionals. In such cases, one “point person” is designated to organize the scheduling, payment, and–if meeting by phone–dialing in at the appointed time.

Consultation Is Not Supervision

Dr. Paulsen has also consulted extensively with corporations, executives, clergy, and other specialty groups. Mr. Coy has in the past provided clinical supervision to Master’s candidates seeking their entry-level licensure as a mental health professional. Fully licensed mental health professionals should understand that consultation is not supervision. To be clear: Supervision suggests that the supervisee is not a licensed mental health professional, but is training to become one. The supervisor, in such an instance, is taking full signatory responsibility for the supervisee’s clinical decisions, treatment, and documentation. Neither Sandra nor Michael offer supervision.

Consultation for Fully Licensed Mental Health Professionals

When a mental health professional engages in consultation, it is because they are fully licensed in their discipline and seeks additional, specialty information from a more experienced practitioner–in this case, Sandra or Michael, the consultant. However, the consultee is still responsible for being conversant in and adhering to the Standard(s) of Care in the State(s) in which they are licensed, in relation to the client(s)/patient(s) about whom a consultation is arranged. Neither Sandra nor Michael assumes any responsibility for consultees’ treatment decisions, clinical outcomes, or professional judgments in relation to their respective clients/patients.

For mental health professionals, the current rate for individual consultation is shown on Sandra’s scheduling page.

For each group consultation hour, the minimum rate is Sandra’s individual rate for up to three individuals, plus an additional $50.00 per each additional attending person, whether or not they present cases. Each group must be entirely administered by one person, who is responsible for scheduling, any internal group communication, agenda setting, and time keeping, as well as for payment arrangements for the entire group. Sandra will consider other arrangements under special circumstances, as arranged by the group contact person. Cancellation of a one hour group consultation with less than 24 hours notice requires payment in full of Sandra’s hourly rate.
